Maybe Brett Kavanaugh Can Save Conservative Supreme Court Justices From Their Judicial Activism

Editor’s note: The opinions in this article are the author’s, as published by our content partner, and do not necessarily represent the views of MSN or Microsoft. Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s consideration for the bench could pull Supreme Court’s conservatives back from their recent lurch into judicial activism. Nowhere else was this judicial activism by Conservative judges more apparent than in last month’s 5-4 Supreme Court decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair. This decision exposed countless small businesses to tax collectors from 46 states. In doing so, the court struck down a key Supreme Court precedent that required a business to be physically...

Pianos in the Parks lets everybody tickle the ivories

CHICAGO – “Ya’ll ready to jam?” Outside the Jackson Park field house, children squeeze between an upright piano and its accompanying bench for a chance to unabashedly pound their fingers across the keys and peek into the inner workings of the instrument’s opened top, where the pedals and hammers are exposed to the summer day. “You got your music juices flowing? Do you feel it in your soul?” asks piano teacher Thaddeus Tukes as he attempts to corral the children from Jackson Park’s summer camp. Before beginning the lesson, he allows the kids to punch the keys, so they...

El Chapo’s trial delayed two months as defense reviews evidence

U.S. District Judge Brian Cogan in Brooklyn said the delay was warranted by the “voluminous” evidence that prosecutors handed over on July 3. He denied a request by Guzman’s lawyer, Eduardo Balarezo, to bar prosecutors from using evidence that they had not produced by June 26. Jury selection had been scheduled for Sept. 5. In a court filing last week, Balarezo had said prosecutors’ late production of evidence “obliterates any semblance of due process and Mr. Guzman’s ability to have a fair trial.” Balarezo said in an email Monday that Guzman was “highly disappointed” with the decision, believing that...

How a genealogist helped police crack an infamous 30-year-old cold case

Indiana police say cutting-edge genealogy and DNA techniques helped solve an infamous, 30-year-old cold case. Police arrested John D. Miller on Sunday and say he confessed to raping and strangling 8-year-old April Tinsley in 1988. When they showed up unannounced at Miller’s home Sunday, detectives say the 59-year-old already knew why: April Tinsley. The 8-year-old vanished in April 1988 walking to a neighbor’s house.  Her body was found dumped in a ditch three days later; she had been raped and strangled, reports CBS News’ Don Dahler. “If it wouldn’t have been for DNA, I don’t think we wouldn’t have...
