German spy agency acknowledges employing Himmler’s daughter

Germany’s intelligence service acknowledged on Friday that it had employed the daughter of top Nazi Heinrich Himmler in the 1960s, although she never renounced her father or Nazism, and remained active in far-right extremism. The revelation that Himmler’s daughter Gudrun Burwitz had worked for the BND spy agency – confirmed by the BND after it was reported by Bild newspaper – could add to public soul-searching over the tolerance of some Nazis after World War Two. Himmler, who as commander of the SS was one of the most powerful Nazis and a principal architect of the murder of six...

How the ‘Bad Boys of Brexit’ forged ties with Russia and the Trump campaign — and came under investigators’ scrutiny

BRISTOL, England —On Aug. 19, 2016, Arron Banks, a wealthy British businessman, sat down at the palatial residenceof the Russian ambassador to London for a lunch of wild halibut and Belevskaya pastila apple sweets accompanied by Russian white wine. Nearly 200 people have been killed in a Syrian government offensive against Islamist fighters and rebels in the country’s southwest, forcing tens of thousands of people to flee toward the closed borders with Jordan and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, according to activists and monitoring groups. Iraq executes 13 death row jihadists to avenge killings

Iraq said Friday executed 13 death row jihadists after Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi vowed a forceful retaliation to calm public anger over the Islamic State group’s murder of abducted civilians. While Iraqis have grown accustomed to the atrocities committed by IS, the killing of the eight civilians shocked the nation and doused hopes the jihadists had been defeated. For the first time, the authorities released photographs of the hangings, which came after Abadi on Thursday ordered the “immediate” executions of hundreds of convicted jihadists. The justice ministry said Friday that the 13 convicts put to death at a prison...
